Hola, I’m Karoline Pelikan!
I’m a bicultural filmmaker, impact producer, and cultural manager.
Often employing participatory filmmaking techniques, my projects intimately capture the essence of personal narratives and human rights issues and were part of major film festivals and markets, and were awarded by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture and international cultural organisations such as the Alliance Française, the Goethe Institute, and the British Arts Council, amongst others. I’m particularly interested how women experience, resist and transform structures of violence and power, and how audiovisual art can make those experiences visible. I’m the founder of ‘EmpoderArte’, a collective that creates safe audiovisual spaces for women and non-binary artists across Peru. With EmpoderArte we have created the first Human Rights Film Festival (Festival de Cine Social y Derechos Humanos) in Peru. I teach film workshops for women and children, and create distribution opportunities for underrepresented Latin American communities and filmmakers. I’ve has also been involved in social action initiatives, collaborating with charities and educational organisations to support causes within a context of environmental, social, cultural, and political risks.
